What project are you developing in the Incubator?

Blágarðar Húsavíkur - Blue Community Garden Húsavík

Tell us a little about it

Blágarðar Húsavíkur is an emerging initiative to establish Iceland’s first floating, community-based sea garden, bringing people closer to the ocean through hands-on learning, collaboration, and creativity. Taking shape in Húsavík harbour, the garden is being developed as a living laboratory for exploring small-scale seaweed and mussel cultivation, marine biodiversity, and environmental monitoring. Together with local residents, researchers, artists, and international partners, the project brings scientific knowledge, creativity, and local experiences into dialogue. Through co-creation, workshops, and educational activities, the garden aims to grow into an accessible space for ocean literacy, community engagement, and new ways of connecting with and caring for the ocean.

What do you hope to achieve by participating in the East of Moon incubator?

During the incubator, I would like to explore how Blágarðar Húsavíkur can develop into a wider creative and collaborative platform connecting marine science, community, art, storytelling, education, and culture. An important part of this next phase is building the core interdisciplinary team that can develop this vision together.

My experience of the programme so far has been very enriching. I enjoy the exchanges within our Incubator community and with the other participants about their projects; I like that we talk about our joys and challenges, and that we set goals together and work towards them. Even though I haven’t been able to attend in person as often as I would have liked, I have still felt very supported and warmly welcomed by the Incubator community.

Where can people follow you / find out more?

I’m still working on the website, but it’s not online yet. That’s why, for the time being, I’ve recently set up an Instagram account where I’ll soon be posting updates on the project: blagardar.husavikur. I’ve also given a few interviews, and several articles about the project have already been published. So if you search for my name and the project name, you’ll find further information, and please feel free to contact me via LinkedIn as well.
